I often talk about the weather when I’m on my appliance repair call outs in Surrey and Sussex, and it’s not always idle chat. This week I was on an emergency washing machine call out in Brighton, all because of the weather.
My customer was a busy mother of three children and two dogs who had postponed her usual April spring clean because of the awful weather. So, as soon as the sunshine and the first of this year’s really good drying days arrived, she crammed everything she could including, curtains, quilts, and sofa covers, into the poor washing machine to get it washed and dried before the kids came home from school.
This particular washing machine was a Hotpoint, a pretty good machine less than two years old, and designed to hold large loads, so she nearly succeeded but the washing machine gave up in the middle of doing the dog beds. When I say gave up, the machine was doing its best – it hadn’t completely ground to a halt. It was trying to spin but was also spurting water out of the soap powder drawer, and making some horrible gurgling noises. So I was called out, and I arrived within the hour. By this time the customer had sensibly switched off the electric, and was trying not to worry about how she’d get the kid’s clothes done…
As it happened the problem turned out to be a pretty common one – a blockage in the sump, which was stopping the water from draining. As the machine tried to spin, water was being forced back up through the system and out from the detergent drawer. Just a few minutes on my hands and knees with handfuls of soggy fluff and dog hairs was enough to sort it, while my customer got on and cooked the tea. No new parts were needed and, best of all, the time was all covered by my (very reasonable!) call out charge, so there was no extra to pay.
