This month I have been called out to towns and villages across Sussex and beyond for fan oven repairs. I’ve travelled from Crawley to Horley and Henfield to Isfield to fix various makes and models of fan oven. Fan oven problems are some of the most common that an appliance engineer is asked to fix. Unlike a conventional oven, a fan oven has an extra part that can go wrong. You’ve guessed it – the fan!
With both an ordinary oven and a fan oven it is the heating element inside the oven that provides the heat. The added extra with a fan oven is that the fan circulates the heat, resulting in quicker cooking times. Fan ovens are generally thought to be superior in terms of energy consumption, but some cooks find that the heat can be too fierce. One way to get round this can be to set the oven temperature a touch lower, and rely in the increased efficiency of the oven to cook the food through.
If the fan breaks on a fan oven, it is still be possible to cook with the oven if the element is still working, but it is preferable to get the broken fan repaired as soon as possible to ensure maximum efficiency, and so other parts of the oven can be checked for safety.
Occasionally I find that a cooker fan has stopped working just because it has got clogged up and needs a good clean. At other times it needs replacement. The good news is that neither option is expensive. A new oven fan can cost as little as £20.00 and you can soon get that back in energy savings.
