February 6 to 12 2012 is UK Go Green week, when schools, colleges and universities take action on climate change. Different issues and activities are highlighted each day, and tips on living a greener life are given.
This Thursday, 9 February, has been designated ‘Switch off Thursday’ when one of the suggested activities is Big Green Home Makeover visits to offer advice about how to reduce water and energy consumption in the home. As we at A Rapid Response appliance repairs like to get in on the action, here are our top 3 tips on green washing machines and tumble driers in Go Green Week:
1. Buy an appliance that is built to last. Some washing machines and tumble driers are cheaper than others, but a cheap washing machine or tumble drier won’t necessarily save you money. Cheaper models are often more likely to break down, and can be more difficult to repair, either because of the way they are built or because it is hard to get spares. We may be in the business of washing machine repairs, and fixing tumble driers but we want you to get good value out of our appliance repairs.
2. Look beyond the energy rating of a particular appliance, and also consider water consumption. Bear in mind that front loading washing machines use around 50% less water than top-loaders. They are also more efficient at washing because of the tumble motion of the drum and gentler on clothes, which last longer as a result. Likewise, because of the way some ratings systems work, a condensing dryer may have the same overall rating as a vented dryer, even though the vented dryer is more energy efficient and cheaper to run.
3. Washer-dryers are notoriously expensive to run and are not known for their eco-friendliness. Generally they have a smaller wash capacity but use more water. For smaller households, they can be a practical alternative to having the heating on full blast and drying clothes on all the radiators. Washer dryers can be more unreliable than having a separate washing machine and tumble dryer but it may still be more economical to repair than replace.
