It’s not an April fool (that was last month): it’s a scientific fact that men are rubbish with domestic appliances – or at least they claim to be.
A Rapid Response is a family run business specialising in domestic appliance repairs in Sussex. So, as you can imagine, this topic is regularly and hotly debated among our engineers and their spouses. And we should make it clear that we are talking about operating household appliances rather than appliance repairs. A female appliance engineer can be at least as good as a male appliance engineer – what matters is their training, knowledge and experience.
When it comes to operating domestic appliances however it seems that many men are happy to admit to failings. Last year, energy company nPower published research relating to 3,000 UK households and discovered that one fifth (20%) of men admit they don’t know how to use their own washing machine, 11% say they can’t use an iron and 10% say they can’t work their oven. Most men also leave arranging washing machine repairs and cooker repairs to women.
It’s not a simple case that women are better than men when it comes to electricals. The nPower research also showed that just as many women admit to being baffled by wireless routers and gadgets. So it seems that at least part of the results are to do with cultural factors: men and women still see domestic appliances as a woman’s responsibility; and both men and women still see gadgets and playthings as men’s territory.
If this isn’t already enough to spark debate at teatime, there’s also research from appliance manufacturer GE which showed that the biggest reason 85% of US women did the laundry was that they didn’t trust anyone else to do it. While you could argue that this is just plain realistic on the part of women, it is possible to conclude that 80% of men are quite happy just to let women believe that men are rubbish at laundry and cooking so the men themselves get more time with their playstations…
